After a top-class performance from the Novice swimmers in the morning session the senior swimmers too went on to produce some outstanding results in the afternoon session. 35 new personal best times were set out a total of 48 races. Three swimmers were unfortunately disqualified due to either technical or stroke infringements but they all responded positively to their disappointment which showed a real strength of character.

An initially nervous Ellen McQuilton went on to produce two solid races hitting lifetime best times and knowing there is even more to come. Catriona Cleary competed in the two events she needed for qualification to the East District age-groups later this year setting two new pb’s but missing both times by fractions of a second. Ollie Carter continued his recent run of excellent form producing more personal best times. Abby Hay smashed the time she set just last week, swimming a sub 1.10 for the first time in 100m Free.

Robyn Henderson and Lindsay Moncrieff raced together in the 100m Freestyle both producing fantastic times with Lindsay now one of the fastest freestylers in her age-group at the club. Jimmy Brooks too put in a solid swim setting a new pb time with 2 ½ seconds off. Kirstin Bousie overcame her disappointment in not finishing the 100m Breaststroke, owing to choking on pool water, by producing a strong 50m Fly and an excellent pb. The dark horse in that heat though was Lindsay Moncrieff, away across in lane one, who delivered a breath-taking 42.62 to reinforce being on top form.

Corrie Hay, following on from last week’s success in the 200m Breaststroke, went on to set a new pb in the 100m too. Rhiannon Laing, who set a good time last week, went even faster still yesterday showing that Breaststroke is still one of her favourite strokes. Jack Gordon, never short of a smile, put in two great swims in his events taking over ten seconds off his 100m Breaststroke in particular. Callum MacPherson, not a lover of the art of breaststroke, also smashed his entry time much to his delight.  Our older girls Nicola, Megan and Katie all swam lifetime best times in each of their swims with Nicola’s 50m Fly particularly impressive. Hannah Thorne overcame her earlier disappointment in the 100m Backstroke by hurtling down the pool on her 50m Fly taking an outstanding 8 ¾ seconds off her time. Euan Baillie continued his good form on Butterfly with younger brother Lewis also setting a new pb in the 100m Fly. Vice-captain Ben Levy also put in a barnstorming swim in his 50m Fly taking over six seconds off. Adam Young showed a return to form by also hitting pb in the same event. Murdo Denholm, disqualified earlier in the day in the 100m Fly produced a stronger swim for pb and proved that he is still one of the clubs best young Fly swimmers.

My thanks to parents who officiated and to Karen Baillie for team management and Catriona McCrone and Mark McQuilton for their support poolside. We’re back at Glenrothes on the 21st September to finish the Fife Leagues season off. Come along and support the swimmers.

The first ever gala at the new Michael Woods Swimming Pool in Glenrothes saw our novice team, once again this season, produce some outstanding results. With a total of eight swimmers picking up ‘Too fast’ flashes identifying that they exceeded the time banding for their swim, smiles were aplenty poolside from swimmers and coaches too.  Olivia Carter and Kerri Stalker entered the meet with three ‘Too fast’ flashes from previous meets, so both now have the full set!!

Mia Anderson was the first into the water for the club and she swam a really strong race finishing in second place overall in the 25m backstroke. Amy Spencer and Emily Baxter followed in the 50m Backstroke, a stroke they had worked hard on the previous evening at Stirling Training and their preparation work was rewarded with excellent personal best times and speed flashes too.  Elle Corbishley produced a fine swim to pb and finish 4th overall. Jack Orr was the only Cupar boy in the water for the 50m Backstroke and put in a solid performance picking up 3rd place overall in his age-group. Little sister Christina Orr then followed in the 25m Breaststroke taking a whopping 11.5 seconds off her time.

The 50m Breaststroke then followed with Olivia Carter swimming very strongly in the heat to pick up a well-deserved speed flash. Kirsten Smith went on to place 5th; Abigail Cousins made a huge improvement on her previous time, as did Albert Badia who finished 4th overall. Eve Hewitt was the next swimmer to pick up a speeding flash for a very confident 25m Butterfly. Coaches had agreed that the shallow end, whilst having blocks, was not deep enough for the swimmers to dive in, so Eve set her new time from a start in the water. Little doubt that from a dive she would have been faster still. Charlotte Williamson was not deterred by her recent shoulder injury, swimming an excellent 50m Butterfly to place 2nd overall only a second away from a speed flash. Isla Lorimer, who stepped in at late notice to cover a swimming place, produced a new personal best and much needed points for the team.  David Reay swam the 50m Fly for the boys and made a big improvement on his time too placing 4th overall. Emily Reay then smashed her 25m Freestyle time placing 4th overall.

Inver Petrie was in ferocious form on his 25m Freestyle setting a blistering pace down the pool and placing 1st overall in an excellent new pb time. The 50m Freestyle swims then followed with all four of our swimmers picking up speed flashes. Kerri Stalker won that coveted fourth speed flash setting a marvellous 38.70 pb. The Cupar girls all swam in the fastest heat finishing with a Cupar 1,2,3 at the wall. Louise Moncrieff had started the race in the lead leaving the blocks in a staggering 0.29 second reaction time, but Kerry caught her at the turn and they battled out the rest of the length, with Louise touching second in a ‘Too fast’ time. Lucy had turned fifth but charged past the other girls to secure third and her speed flash too. Cameron Paterson inspired by the girls efforts went on to dominate his heat and finish first at the wall where he too picked up a speed flash, in what was his first ‘sub-forty’ freestyle swim.

As the gala neared a close, the swimmers found themselves racing and then immediately marshalling for their next races, but their earlier excellent swims kept them buoyant and more good swims were to follow. In the 50m Fly, Eve Hewitt took 6 ½  seconds off her time and placed 1st overall. Then in the 100m IM Olivia Carter produced her fastest ever swim to place first overall in her age group too. The attitude, behaviour and performance of our swimmers was first class with sporting behaviour always shown to other swimmers and politeness shown to officials and marshals which is a credit to them. My thanks to the parents who helped out by officiating and to Jane Reay, Alan Cousins, Zac Yule and Bab’s Carter who assisted me poolside and thanks to Isla for supporting the team at short notice. We’re back at the leagues on Saturday 21st September where swimmers will once again be competing, some looking for that last coveted speed flash of the season!!

A fantastic weekend of swimming saw a total of nine medals secured and personal best swims in 60 out of 81 swims. This was the first competition of the new season and I was hopeful that swimmers would compete close to their PB’s but did not expect such a high level of achievement across the board. 10-yr-old Adam Young, whilst not on top form at the weekend, reminded us that he is one of the top swimmers in his age group winning a cracking 5 medals and also landing a cash prize too!! Thomas Farrell picked up the Gold medal in the 50m Backstroke on day one, with Adam collecting Gold in the same event and Gold in the 100m too. Bronze in the 100m IM was to follow for Adam, and then on Sunday he picked up two silvers in his final events the 50m Free and 50m Fly.

13-yr-old Ollie Carter was on stupendous form swimming an unbelievable nine out of nine personal best times and winning Bronze medals in the 100m Free and 200m IM. Club Captain Euan Baillie was also ‘in the groove’ at the weekend swimming PB’s in all five races and winning a Silver medal in the 100m Fly. Abby and Corrie Hay swam extremely well on Sunday morning picking up personal bests in all their swims too. Millie Buchan, who came along on Sunday morning even though she was second reserve for her swims was given places in the Freestyle and went on to set two more PB’s to add to the two secured on Saturday in the Backstroke. Murdo Denholm, who is set to join the Fife Development Squad, achieved three lifetime best swims on Sunday, putting in a strong swim in his 200m IM in particular.

13-yr-old Kirstin Bousie had her recent focus at training pay off as she competed in three races over the weekend setting lifetime bests in each. Her 100m Breaststroke was a particularly excellent swim and qualifies her for the forthcoming East District Age Group events this season.

9-yr-old Charlotte Williamson, fresh from her recent move to the Gold Squad, put in three excellent swims finishing in 4th, 5th and 6th places in her three races in the 8-10yr-old girls category. Similarly, Eve Hewitt too swam extremely well in each of her events with a massive smile on display after she set each of her new personal bests. Max Innes proved himself to be a fine Breaststroke swimmer setting excellent new times in each of his races. Turn judges captured three of our swimmers on the Backstroke turning too early at the wall and gliding in, leading to their disqualification, so lots of practice on Backstroke turns can be expected over the coming sessions.

Overall, I was delighted by the attitude and discipline of our swimmers. Their underwater work during starts was often the best in each of the heats and gave them an advantage over their competitors.

Our next meet is on Sunday 8th September when we gather for the Fife Leagues at the new Michael Woods Centre in Glenrothes.

My thanks to Karen Baillie for her usual top-class team management and to Duncan Hewitt, Bab’s Carter and Wendy Hay for their coaching support poolside.
